Shopify just paid $99 million for one domain name: Shop.com.
It is now the highest publicly known domain sale ever. In this post, you will learn what happened, why Shopify paid so much, and what it means for online sellers in the US.
What Happened?
In late September 2026, news broke that Shopify had bought Shop.com. Market America Worldwide announced on September 28, 2026 that it had completed the sale. At that time, neither company shared the price.
Then, on November 3, 2026, Shopify released its quarterly SEC filing (Form 10-Q). It showed $99 million spent to acquire intangible assets. In the same period last year, that number was $0. Domain investor George Kirikos spotted the line, and other domain news sites confirmed it.
Shopify did not buy a full company here. It bought a domain name. Reports also say the seller had to move to a new domain, which may have added to the price.
What Is Shopify?
Shopify is a commerce platform. It lets you sell online and in person, and manage your business from one place. Small sellers use it to open their first store. Big brands use it to sell in the US and in other countries.
It is also very large. In the second quarter of 2026, merchants on Shopify processed about $115.6 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV) worldwide. That is why this deal matters. Shopify is not a small startup. It is one of the main tools sellers use every day.
Why Did Shopify Pay $99 Million?
Shop.com is short, simple, and easy to remember. People in the US already know the word “shop”. They can type it fast, say it fast, and trust it fast.
A short .com name like this is rare. There is only one Shop.com in the world, and nobody can make another one. For a company that helps stores sell online, it is also a perfect fit.
Shopify already owned Shop.app, which it bought in 2020 for $200,000. Now it owns Shop.com too. Together, they give it two strong names for shoppers.
Who Sold Shop.com?
Market America sold it. The company bought Shop.com in 2011 and held it for about 15 years. The name had sold for $3.5 million back in 2003, so its value has grown a lot over time.
After the sale, Market America did not leave ecommerce. On September 22, 2026, it launched a redesigned MarketAmerica.com, built on Shopify’s platform.
How Big Is This Sale?
Here is how it compares with the earlier records:
- Shop.com (2026): $99 million
- AI.com: $70 million (the previous record)
- Voice.com (2019): $30 million
Shop.com beat AI.com by $29 million. It beat Voice.com by $69 million.
Before the filing, domain broker Andrew Rosener said on X that he had heard the price was $100 million. The filing later showed $99 million, which is very close.
One note: this is the highest publicly known sale. Private deals are not always reported, so a bigger one could exist.
What Does This Mean for US Online Sellers?
A good domain still matters. A short .com name can build trust in seconds. A shopper sees a clear name and feels safe to click. A long or confusing name can do the opposite.
A good name can also bring direct visitors. People can type it from memory and do not need Google to find you.
You do not need a $99 million domain to start. But your domain is part of your brand. It is the first thing a customer sees.
What Can You Learn From This?
- Simple wins. Shop.com is one easy word. Anyone in the US can say it and spell it.
- Trust is valuable. A clear name gives trust on day one, and that is hard to buy any other way.
- Think long term. Shop.com grew in value over many years because the name stayed simple and useful.
If you are starting a store, do not rush your domain choice. Check if the .com is free. Say it out loud. Ask a friend to spell it after hearing it once. If they get it right, it is a good name. Avoid long words, strange spellings, and extra dashes.
Final Thoughts
$99 million for just a name sounds crazy at first. But for Shopify, Shop.com is a direct door to millions of shoppers. It shows that in 2026, a short and clear .com name is still worth a lot.
